Senior Youth Club Volunteer Assistant

Our Volunteer Assistants work alongside MFRC Program Staff and other volunteers, ensuring the youth club remains a safe and pleasant haven for youth age 12-17 yrs. The youth have many resources to occupy themselves, including a pool table, hockey table, foosball table, karaoke machine, dance machine, wii console, x-box console, projection TV, videos, computers, crafts, games and sensory garden. The youth can also access all of the community resources and often have offsite activities at the gym, pool, bowling alley, library, arena, BMX and scateboard park. The Youth Club has kitchen facilites, allowing us bake and cook, and as an excellent fundraiser, we offer canteen sales. The Senior Youth Club runs on Tuesday and Thursday evenings between 6.00 pm and 9.00 pm. Each month we offer a Senior Youth Club Fieldtrip/Special Event. Sometimes we take the youth to Medicine Hat to watch a movie, or to the Leisure Centre. Other times, it's a trip to the Mall for a day of shopping. We have taken them to the water-slides over the summer months, and to Echo Dale for a day of 'fun-in-the-sun'. On occasion, we take them further a-field to 'hook-up' with the Calgary MFRC youth. In Calgary we have access to 'All-Night Lazer Tag' events, as well as their youth club facilities. Some of the special events take place in the village. We frequently host dances, including 'Dip & Dance' parties at the pool, or bowling and spaghetti bolognaise, aptly named 'Bowlognaise' night! We have had Henna Tatoos for the girls sleepover and a guest speaker who climbed Mt. Everest for the guys night. This is a fun volunteer position, and requires that you have a sense of humour in order to connect with the youth. You can volunteer one night a week, one night a month or as frequently as you wish. You may only be interested in the field trips or special events...however you slice it, we are always appreciative of helping hands! Feel free to try it out before you register as a volunteer, drop by the MFRC for more information.

Front Desk Receptionist Volunteer Assistant

Our Volunteer Assistants work on the MFRC Front Desk, greeting community members, service providers and military personnel. The phone is always ringing, so telephone skills are important, but a dazzling smile for people coming through the door is paramount. Our community members often comment that the person on the front desk was the first person they met, and that memory stays with many for a long time. This position can be extremely busy, and volunteers are often juggling telephone calls, course bookings and payments, community members stopping for a coffee and general office duties. Do you have office skills that you want to keep fluid, or maybe you don't want a 'gap' in your resume? All volunteers are given an in-depth orientation on the desk, working alongside our full time receptionist, prior to thier first volunteer 'shift'. You will learn what courses and workshops are taking place, where to find new information, who to ask for specific information, which staff are associated with individual programs, who's who in the building and after a short period of time, you will be able to rattle off all the phone numbers in Ralston (a huge portion of this position is answering questions like, "...Hi, do you know the number to the Library?"). The MFRC is the hub of the village, if you have a thirst to know what special events and activities are going on in our community, this position has your name all over it! Volunteers can offer a morning or afternoon each week, or every other week...you decide what works for you.

Media Spokesperson Volunteer Assistant

Our Volunteer Assistants work alongside Core Staff to promote and advocate for MFRC Programs, Activities and Special Events. Promotion can be in the form of advertising on air, on the local Information Channel, in committee meetings, at forums and at social events. Our focus is advertising via the BFBS Radio Station. The radio staff, a fun bunch to work with, allow us to highlight our services, at no cost, through live and pre-taped interviews. Our volunteer assistants chose which method of delivery they are most comfortable with, and either attend a weekly live show, or pre-tape four individual 'sessions' for the current month, retaping as necessary. Some volunteers request that the information to be aired is given to them in hard copy a few days prior to taping, they feel this allows them time to review and learn, and gives them time to complete additional research. Other volunteers have booked to meet with core staff just before going on-air/recording, and prefer to make thier own notes from the discussions. Some of our past volunteers have made a few variations with their broadcasts-they might promote a different department each week, or highlight all of that weeks MFRC activities. Some have made a 'generic' tape that can be played at any time, and we even had a jingle created once that included who was who in the MFRC. All advertising is good advertising...bring on your creativity! If you are unsure as to how you will sound on-air, come in and we will arrange a trial taping. You will be amazed at how professional and confident you sound, once the radio experts have spliced and diced and worked their magic!

Kiddie Kare Volunteer Assistant

Our Volunteer Assistants work in the Kiddie Kare Program and are often referred to as our 'Baby Huggers'. Kiddie Kare is a childcare program for the birth-3's that runs Monday-Friday, 8:30 am -11.40 am. The philisophy in Kiddie Kare is that 'Children learn through play', and all activities are centered around interaction with a variety of learning toys. All interactions, with the toys, their peers and the adults will enhance each childs social, emotional and cognitive development. Our volunteers play with the children, with the toys, read, craft, go on walks, take the children to the gym, sing, dance and generally bring out their inner child! Be a central part in this busy program. Your volunteer efforts allow us to keep our program overheads to a minimum, while continuing to offer quality, affordable childcare. You can be as involved as you want. Volunteers are invited to attend staff meetings, assist in the development and evaluation of the program and bring new and fresh ideas to the table. You can bring your little ones with you, at no additional cost, getting the best out of your volunteering-you have the opportunity to give back to the community, your little one has the opportunity to play with his or her peers in a bright and cheerfull environment. Volunteer on a regular basis, to a set schedule (created by you), or have your volunteer details added to offer last minute cover for staff sickness etc.
